Idalia strengthens over Gulf of Mexico and is now predicted to hit Florida as Category 4 hurricane

Republicans in Washington and Georgia are looking for ways to punish Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis for indicting Donald Trump. But Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and some other Republicans in the state are opting out of the push, even as Trump eggs it on. In Washington, House Republicans last week announced an investigation of Willis. And in Georgia, Republicans are coalescing around a plan to seek Willis’ removal by a new state prosecutorial oversight commission that begins work on Oct. 1. Trump has made repeated attacks on Willis. But Kemp has kept criticism of Willis at arm’s length, underlining how ingrained his divide with Trump has become.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has issued a cautionary state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Idalia’s expected arrival in the state, the governor announced Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say 11 people aboard a Delta Air Line flight have been taken to the hospital after the plane hit turbulence while heading to Atlanta. The Federal Aviation Administration says Flight 175 had left Milan, Italy, and was about 40 miles northeast of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport when the crew reported severe turbulence. Delta says both crew members and passengers were injured and were taken to the hospital. There's no word on their conditions. The Airbus A350 landed safely at the airport shortly before 7 p.m. Delta says the plane was carrying 151 passengers and 14 crew members. The uninjured passengers were being offered food, lodging and re-booking. The FAA says it will investigate the incident.

BOISE, Idaho — After a year of avoiding the Ada County Courthouse in a defamation case brought against him, far-right activist Ammon Bundy appeared for a hearing Tuesday morning.

Australians will vote on Oct. 14 in a referendum that would enshrine in the nation’s constitution a mechanism for Indigenous people to advise Parliament on policies that effect their lives known as the Voice. Proponents say embedding the Voice in the constitution would recognize the special place that Indigenous people have in Australian history while giving them input in government policies. Opponents argue it would be the biggest change to Australia’s democracy in the nation’s history and divide Australians along racial lines without reducing Indigenous disadvantage. Here are some questions and answers about key issues behind the referendum:

DETROIT — A 17-year-old from Maryland faces criminal charges in his home state after allegedly making threats to shoot up Oxford High School in Michigan, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

LANSING, Mich. — A lawsuit that alleges Michigan's new legislative district lines unfairly discriminate against Black voters and candidates will go to trial in federal court under a court order issued Tuesday.
